The greenhouse at Gunni Gal Farms was designed to endure the challenging climate of Gunnison, Colorado, making it a year-round food production hub. This durability enables the farm to grow fresh, nutrient-dense leafy greens even during the harsh winter months when outdoor farming is impossible.
At the heart of the farm’s innovative approach is our partnership with The Aquaponics Source™, which introduced a state-of-the-art aquaponics system into the greenhouse. Aquaponics, which combines aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (soil-less plant growth), creates a symbiotic environment where fish waste provides nutrients for the plants, while the plants naturally filter and purify the water, which is then recirculated back to the fish tanks. This closed-loop system minimizes water usage and reduces environmental impact, making it a perfect fit for the dry climate of Gunnison.
Thanks to this efficient system, Gunni Gal Farms uses less water than the average family of four, with the majority of the water being recycled, making it an exceptionally sustainable operation. This system allows the farm to provide fresh produce year-round, offering the local community access to high-quality greens that would otherwise be imported. The farm’s aquaponic system not only produces vegetables but also fish, providing an additional source of food.
The greenhouse design itself incorporates energy-efficient technologies, such as a SunSense™ controller and a wetwall evaporative cooling system, ensuring a stable growing environment even in extreme temperatures. By combining cutting-edge agricultural practices with sustainable greenhouse technologies, Gunnigal Farms is able to thrive commercially, supplying local grocery stores and restaurants with fresh, year-round produce while significantly reducing operational costs.
